MARTY GLICKMAN - SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

Field: Sports Media
Country: United States
Born: August 14, 1917 in Bronx, New York
*********************
One of America’s premier sports broadcasters for five decades, Marty Glickman was the radio and television playby- play voice of the National Football League’s New York Giants from 1948 to 1971; the American Football League’s New York Jets from 1972 to 1979 and 1987 to 1989; the National Basketball Association’s New York Knickerbockers from 1946 to 1970; pre-game and post-game shows for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Yankees for 22 years; and Yonkers Raceway for twelve years.
MARTY WAS A GREAT ATHLETE WHO PLAYED PRO FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL, BUT IS MOST REMEMBERED FOR BEING DENIED OLYMPIC FAME, WHEN THE U.S. OLYMPIC PRESIDENT, AVERY BRUNDAGE, HAD MARTY REMOVED FROM A RELAY TEAM TO AVOID ADOLPH HITLER HAVING TO AWARD A GOLD MEDAL TO A JEWISH ATHLETE AT THE 1936 GAMES IN BERLIN.
I MOST REMEMBER MARTY FOR HIS CALLING THE HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK IN NEW YORK. HE WAS THE MOST DOWN TO EARTH GUY YOU COULD EVER MEET, A MAN'S MAN.
HE TOOK THE TIME TO COME INTO THE LOCKER-ROOM BEFORE A GAME AT WINGATE HIGH SCHOOL AND SOCIALIZE WITH THE PLAYERS AND WE ALL RECOGNIZED THAT HE DID NOT HAVE TO DO THAT.
YOU COULD TELL, HE WAS SHOWING RESPECT TO THE SCHOOL, THE PLAYERS AND THE GAME ITSELF, BY GIVING HIS TIME TO VISIT WITH WITH HIGH SCHOOL KIDS AND ANSWERING ANY QUESTION HE MIGHT BE ASKED.
MARTY HAD THAT "SOMETHING," THAT MADE HIM SPECIAL AND MADE YOU FEEL
IT WAS ACCEPTABLE TO CALL HIM MARTY - HE BECAME AN OLD FRIEND, TEN SECONDS AFTER YOU MET HIM.
