EDDIE "THE CZAR" SIMMONS

I HAVE TO PLEAD IGNORANCE TO THE GREAT PLAY OF
"THE CZAR" -- I ONLY SAW HIM PLAY A FEW TIMES AND
I DID NOT APPRECIATE WHAT I WAS SEEING; BUT
I HAVE TO TAKE THE WORD OF SO MANY FOLKS THAT
I RESPECT AND THEIR WORDS ARE NOTHING BUT
PRAISE FOR MISTER SIMMONS AND THE MAGIC HE
WORKED ON A BASKETBALL COURT.
HIS EFFORTS TO HELP OTHERS AND GIVE BACK TO THE
YOUNGER GENERATION RATES HIGHER THAN ANYTHING, ANYONE DOES ON A BASKETBALL COURT.

In Foul, by David Wolf, the great biography of Connie Hawkins, Wolf writes that Simmons was seriously classed with Bob Cousy as a ballhandler. When Hawkins was in the ABA, Hawkins got Simmons and Jackie Jackson a tryout and they both shined---but, likely because of their race, were denied places on the team.
