CHRIS LEAK - QUARTERBACK

NOVEMBER 2004

Since local television affiliates refuse to show us any game involving a team south of the Ohio River, I thought maybe you do not receive Midwest / Northern games. This story was told during the broadcast of the Iowa / Wisconsin game; by the color commentator.
DREW TATE, a star high school quarterback, visited The University of Iowa, the same weekend as Chris Leak of CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA'S INDEPENDENCE HIGH.
Both fellows had good visits. At the end of the visit, the head coach met with each individually to see where they stood on Iowa and their feelings about playing there. Tate was asked his thoughts and college priorities.
He said (paraphrased): "My decision will be based upon where Chris Leak decides to go to school." "We were bored earlier today, so Chris and I played a little catch with a football. I now know that no matter how talented or confident a quarterback is, he will never get into the game, if he is on the same sideline as Chris Leak."
I found it refreshing to hear one athlete give proper due to another deserving talent.
THANKS DAVE FOR THAT REPORT.

I REPEAT WHAT I HAVE SAID SO MANY TIMES ( WHICH IS THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD REPEAT ) -- THE GREAT ONES ARE OUT ON THE FIELD BY THEMSELVES, THE OTHER PLAYERS ARE THERE JUST TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE RULES. CHRIS LEAK IS THE GREATEST PASSING QUARTERBACK SINCE THE LEGENDARY JOE WILLIE NAMATH WAS A LAD OF TENDER YEARS.
COACH SANDY GILLIAM, OF LANCASTER, SOUTH CAROLINA AND I BOTH KNEW THE INSTANT WE SAW HIM THROW A FOOTBALL, THAT NO ONE IN THE LAST 40 YEARS HAS THROWN IT BETTER.
I DON'T HOLD MY OPINION VERY HIGH, BUT WHEN COACH GILLIAM CONFIRMED MY VIEW, I HAVE NO DOUBT OF THE VIEW'S CORRECTNESS. IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY A GAME AND AT THE SAME TIME,WATCH THE BEST SOPHMORE QUARTERBACK IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND A FUTURE HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER, WATCH CHRIS LEAK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA CONDUCT A FOOTBALL GAME AS IF HE WAS DIRECTING A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

I WROTE THIS WHILE CHRIS WAS A SOPHMORE - IN HIS SENIOR YEAR, HE QUARTERBACKED HIS FLORIDA GATORS TO THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
